Denver, CO: TEDxBoulder has announced that The Phoenix’s Director of Research and Evaluation, Jacki Hillios, PhD, will speak at its Saturday, September 21 event in Boulder, CO. at 5pm at Macky Auditorium Concert Hall on the University of Colorado at Boulder campus. TEDxBoulder is an independently organized event that highlights local and national issues by presenting experts on a variety of topics. TEDx programs range from entertaining or scholarly talks to musical and dance performances. With an overarching theme of Fear and Loathing, the evening focuses on “ideas worth sharing” bringing together members of the community while presenting thought provoking presentations.
Dr. Hillios has practiced in the social work field for over 20 years and has been part of Phoenix from its inception in 2006. For the first 15 years of her professional career, Hillios worked as a clinical social worker with youth and families struggling with mental illness, physical illness, and addiction. Her work in a Massachusetts wraparound program serving families showed her that family-centered care and peer support had the power to help individuals heal from addiction.
Dr. Hillios will speak about the role of social innovation, the power of community, physical activity and the Phoenix culture to transform lives and erase the shame that often surrounds recovery. Dr. Hillios will focus on some hard questions: Why do some people transcend addiction while others fail? And, why is it that some are able to stay sober while the lives of others are derailed by a lifelong struggle with their addiction? In answering those questions, she will help the audience understand how the resilience of the human spirit and social factors can set the stage for those struggling with addiction to choose a pathway to health.
The Phoenix is a 501(c)3 providing over 55 FREE events per week along the front range of Colorado to people in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction The activities include climbing, hiking, boxing, running, swimming, yoga, strength training, CrossFit, social events and road and mountain biking.
