Movement for Mental Health - The Phoenix

Event Details

in collaboration with FitOps

The Phoenix is proud to host this special community challenge in collaboration with FitOps, a non profit organization dedicated to improving the physical and mental health of veterans by creating purpose and community through the power of fitness.

In support of National PTSD Awareness Day, Movement for Mental Health draws awareness to Veteran and Active-Duty Military PTSD and suicide.  As more than half of all Veteran suicides involve alcohol or substances, The Phoenix is honored to take part in this annual event on June 26th.

The Challenge:

On Saturday, June 26, take on one of three challenge options:

  • 22 Miles: walk, run, bike, hike… cover the miles however you choose!
  • 22 Miles with a Team: cover the miles with the same options but split them up between as many people as you choose to team up with.
  • 22 Minutes of Activity: Any movement that is meaningful to you counts, whether you choose to do 22 minutes of a workout, a walk, a run, yoga, or meditation.

FitOps created the 22 mile challenge to honor and remember the 22 Veterans who are lost each day to suicide.  You are invited to participate in whichever version of this challenge feels best to YOU or your team.

Please join our Facebook Group, created especially for this event!  Once you’ve completed your chosen event, join us in the Challenge Facebook Group to post a summary of your activity, photos if you choose, and words of support for the group.

PTSD Awareness Day:

Following the challenge, Sunday, June 27th is PTSD Awareness Day, on which we take a day of rest and remembrance.  FitOps shows support for PTSD Awareness by posting a turquoise square on social media.  As a challenge participant, you are welcome to post a square on your own social media, to use ##PTSDAwarenessDay and tag @riserecoverlive and @fitops if you choose.

Thank you to FitOps for allowing us to host this event, and Tony Garcia, Veteran and Phoenix Fitness Instructor, for bringing awareness to this important day.  Learn more about FitOps and their mission to end Veteran suicide at https://fitops.org/

“This event is personal for me as I am a Veteran diagnosed with PTSD and have struggled with suicidal ideations. The Phoenix has helped me overcome my addiction to alcohol, allowing me to heal in the process. Over 50% of Veteran suicides involve alcohol or other substances.” – Sergeant First Class Anthony Garcia
