Volunteer FAQs

WHAT DO PHOENIX VOLUNTEERS DO?

The primary roles are: 1. Leading events: Facilitating Phoenix activities for which you are passionate about and have experience to offer. Certifications may apply based on the discipline. 2. Supporting events: Supporting Phoenix activities for which you are passionate about. Certifications are not required. 3. Outreach: Serving as an ambassador of the Phoenix to promote the impact, mission and events with your circles of influence. Certifications are not required.

WHAT KIND OF COMMITMENT DOES IT TAKE TO VOLUNTEER?

We typically ask for a commitment of 2 hours per week for 6 months or more. We understand that’s not always possible, so the Phoenix is willing to work with your schedule to find the best fit. Supporting roles may offer additional flexibility.

DO I NEED TO BE IN RECOVERY TO VOLUNTEER?

No. Phoenix volunteers can be peers who have lived experiences through their own recovery journey OR a personal connection to the mission—an ally in the sober community.

WHAT KIND OF EVENTS OR CLASSES CAN I LEAD OR SUPPORT?

Options are endless! Identify the activity you are most passionate about and the skills you have to offer. Chances are, people will want to join you. Consider zero barrier events when getting started which are activities that don’t require a certification, equipment, or resources such as: walking, running, hiking, meditation, and social events like book clubs, coffee meetups, game nights, and music. Other activities that generally do require materials, equipment, and/or a dedicated space might include: arts and crafts, team sports, boxing, camping, fitness classes, yoga, mountain or road biking, watersports, snow sports, and rock climbing. Have something else in mind? Fantastic! Phoenix activities come in all different varieties, and we invite you to share your ideas with us. Aligning with our Guiding Principle of fostering a healing culture, we thoughtfully support events that can be done safely and are welcoming and inclusive to all abilities. Activities really catch on when people can participate on a regular basis. Let us know what activity you have in mind during your onboarding journey.

DO I NEED A CERTIFICATE OR A GYM TO VOLUNTEER?

No. Certification requirements can include discipline-specific certifications or CPR certifications. There are many types of events that do not require any certification or a gym; requirements depend on the kind of events you’d like to lead. Some popular events that do require certification include climbing, CrossFit, Olympic lifting, water sports, and yoga. The Phoenix also provides CPR training for volunteers that need CPR to lead their event. A gym is also not necessary to host Phoenix classes – volunteers have hosted classes at local parks, community centers, and other public spaces.

WHAT TRAINING & SUPPORT CAN I EXPECT FROM THE PHOENIX?

The Phoenix will equip you with an understanding of the Phoenix's mission, how to lead safe and inclusive events, and tools to help you build classes and community. You will have dedicated staff to guide you every step of the way in your onboarding journey. Once onboarded, you will receive continued support from a Phoenix staff who is available for any challenges or creative ideas that you might have. We also pay for your CPR or First Aid certification. Interested? Let us know!

DO VOLUNTEERS GET FREE SWAG?

Absolutely! Our volunteers are ambassadors to our movement, and the Phoenix provides swag to volunteers to show the important role they play. Volunteer incentives are a part of the Phoenix volunteering experience to celebrate key milestones in Phoenix volunteers’ journey in impacting the lives of those in recovery.

CAN I LEAD EVENTS ON THE VIRTUAL PLATFORM?

Not at this time. An alternative option is to leverage The Phoenix Virtual and On Demand classes by gathering a group of people in your community, signing up for the class, and streaming it so that you can all participate together. Participating in a Phoenix Community Challenge as a group is another fabulous (and virtual) opportunity.
