In celebration of National Volunteer Week, we’re spotlighting the passionate, generous volunteers who make The Phoenix what it is. These are the folks who show up again and again to create spaces where healing happens, through laughter, creativity, movement, and community.
Catherine Irwin is one of those volunteers. Catherine is based out of Dallas, TX, and as a mentor and leader on our virtual platform, has hosted more than 140 events that have reached more than 4,200 people with her unique blend of warmth, creativity, and care. Whether it’s through poetry, art, or a vibrant Sober Happy Hour, she helps members feel seen and supported.
So, we sat down with Catherine to hear what keeps her coming back, how she empowers new volunteers, and why creating welcoming spaces for expression and growth is her greatest passion.
The Phoenix (PHX): Why do you volunteer with The Phoenix?
Catherine Irwin (CI): I volunteer with The Phoenix because it’s an amazing way to give back and be a part of something bigger. It’s awesome to be part of a community that’s all about connection, growth, and healing.
PHX: Why do you mentor other volunteers?
CI: I wanted to make a bigger difference. This is a chance to help others in a more hands-on way and create an environment where everyone feels supported and motivated. Creating a safe place for all of us to share and grow is important to me.
PHX: What do you get out of your role as a mentor?
CI: I am truly inspired by the vulnerability, growth, and transformation of our volunteers. It’s rewarding to contribute to an environment of encouragement and resilience, while also continuing my personal growth.
PHX: What do you get out of your role as a leadership volunteer at The Phoenix?
CI: I love expressing my authentic self through art and sharing the joy of creating with others. I am passionate about empowering women, sharing intentional creativity practices, practicing mindfulness, creating vision boards, and writing poetry. I love The Phoenix community!
