As a Virtual Volunteer Community Leader at the Phoenix, you'll be a steady, trusted presence for volunteers across our virtual spaces — mentoring fellow volunteers, strengthening community culture, and helping more people find connection in recovery. This is a leadership opportunity for experienced volunteers who are ready to take their impact further.
Key ResponsibilitiesMentorship & Onboarding: Coach and support new virtual volunteers before, during, and after events.
Event Support: Moderate Zoom chat, troubleshoot basic technical issues, and escalate safety concerns to staff.
Community Building: Model Phoenix culture, foster safe and welcoming virtual spaces, and strengthen volunteer engagement.
Recruitment: Help identify high-potential volunteers and support future application cycles.
Leadership Development: Attend weekly check-ins, participate in peer learning exchanges, and mentor future VVCL candidates.
Qualifications
Existing Phoenix virtual volunteers preferred; applicants must be active and in good standing
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Experience mentoring individuals and/or groups
Comfortable facilitating and supporting virtual events on Zoom
Passion for recovery, community, and helping others grow
Time Commitment & Length of Service
Approximately 5 hours per week starting in May 2026, for a one-year service commitment. Succession planning is built into this role — VVCLs are expected to identify and develop emerging leaders within the volunteer community.

What is a Virtual Volunteer Community Leader (VVCL)?
A VVCL is a peer leader who supports Phoenix’s virtual volunteer community by mentoring volunteers, helping with onboarding, and assisting during virtual events. This is a volunteers-supporting-volunteers role.
What does “virtual” include?
The VVCL role supports:
Live virtual classes and events (Zoom)
Online community engagement and mentorship
This role does not include in-person events.
What will I actually do as a VVCL?
VVCLs focus on four main areas:
Mentorship & Onboarding – support and coach new volunteers
Event Support – help moderate chat, troubleshoot basic issues, escalate concerns
Community Building – model Phoenix culture and inclusivity
Leadership Development – participate in trainings and mentor future leaders
How much time does this role require?
Up to 5 hours per week
Includes mentorship, event support, weekly check-ins, and trainings
How long is the commitment?
1-year term
With structured support, check-ins, and a midpoint review
Who is eligible to apply?
You should:
Be an active volunteer in good standing
Have led approximately 25–30 virtual events
Demonstrate alignment with Phoenix values (safety, inclusivity, professionalism)
Be reliable and engaged
How many VVCLs will be selected?
We are looking to recruit approximately 5–8 VVCLs for this cohort.

Yes. All VVCLs will complete onboarding that covers:
Event support and moderation
Mentorship best practices
Psychological safety and inclusivity
Communication tools and expectations
