Welcome to The Phoenix Poetry Challenge! Maybe you’re thinking; “Poetry? I’m not a poet, and I don’t know how to write poetry!” To that, we say… you are not alone! This challenge is beginner-friendly and open to all levels of poets and poets-to-be. Set your preconceived notions aside and give it a try. If you enjoy music, reading, or can compose a short thoughtful text on your phone, you already have the tools to create a poem.
In this challenge, we will start out with short writing exercises to get your creative mind working while keeping it very simple. As the month progresses, you will have the chance to build on your skills and share with the group in several different ways, but sharing is never required. Along with the challenge Facebook Group, in which you can share your work at any time, you have the option to join us once a week- on Mondays at 8:30pm EST- to share your work live. In both these settings, you can share the week’s suggested writing exercise, an unrelated poem you have written, or a piece that you enjoyed from another author. You are also welcome to just come and hang out; sharing is not required! Simply join the challenge to support your Phoenix family.
All that is required is to keep an open mind, challenge yourself, and have fun. Poetry can be an inspirational and cathartic experience that anyone can engage in, and with The Phoenix spirit, we can experience this without fear of judgment.
Each week, a video will be posted in the Facebook Group, explaining the week’s prompt. Throughout the week, you are invited to post in the group and to comment supportive feedback for others. At the end of each week, you can join the livestream event to share or listen. (Please note: Livestream events will NOT be recorded.)
Below, you’ll find a brief overview of the month’s itinerary:
Week 1: 6 Word Memoirs
Week 2: Haikus
Week 3: Recovery Based Poem (any format welcome)
Week 4: Open Share/Open Mic (share on any poem, any format welcome)
